Books by Kallos Kids: Our Story

More than a decade ago, a schoolmate, Sanjana Tadepalli, launched a literacy nonprofit called Storybook Me, where children were featured as the heroes of their very own storybook. The aim was both to ignite an interest in reading among children, and to boost their self-esteem

Inspired by the project, in 2015, I created a few personalised story booklets for my students while teaching at a nonprofit in Aceh, Indonesia. The children who received them persevered in reading and comprehending every word on each page, and I witnessed their quiet smiles of pride peek through their shy demeanour. I was heartened by how personalised books fuel a child’s inclination towards reading, and impact their sense of self.

Reading and writing is more than an examination skill. Language is an invaluable tool for self-expression, influence, and inspiration. It empowers, impacts, and liberates.

A child’s love for reading and writing is not ignited through piles of mandatory assessments and homework, but by allowing them to discover the magic of language, and what language can do for them: to broaden their horizons; to connect with their deepest emotions; to express their innermost thoughts.

Our Mission

The mission of our Books initiative is twofold. As we depict the stories of children and their families, we aim to:

  1. Fuel a strong and positive self-image, deep self-confidence, and unshakeable self-worth in children.

  2. Further children’s interest in reading and inclination towards books.
